I truly want to understand what you wrote.

Are good poems those that rhyme? What kind of quality should poems have to be considered good? Essentially these are questions that Walt Whitman attempts to answer in his preface to “Leaves of Grass”. Whitman in his prologue highlights the unity and plainness of life and people and at the same time he gives a lecture to other poets about the main aim of poems and how they should be written so they can be easily understood by everyone. “The poetic quality is not marshaled in rhyme or abstract addresses to things nor in melancholy complaints or good precepts, but is the life of these and much else and is in the soul” (Whitman 10).

I think that in the above-mentioned passage, Whitman maintained that a poet's style should be simple and natural, without traditional meter or rhyme in order to be fully meaningful. He encourages poets to use free verse and use plain language instead of rhymes. Furthermore, Whitman cautions poets that, “the fluency and ornaments of the finest poems or music or orations or recitations are not independent but dependent [therefore, he thinks that a person] who troubles himself about his ornaments or fluency is [entirely] lost” (Whitman 10).
There is a way poetry should be written in order to be well understood and meaningful. Take the “Sonnet” written anonymously in November 1857 where the author instead of giving the lecture how to write poetry, he illustrate is by example. He uses the seasons in order to express his thoughts and help others to understand him. “To be in tune with what the robins sing, plastering new log-huts ‘mid her branches gray; But when the Autumn southward turns away, then in her veins burns most the blood of Spring, and every leaf, intensely blossoming…the Maple put her corals on in May.” (Sonnet 120) I am assuming that the author in this passage talks about how our lives depend on the nature and how deeply we are attached to it if we want to or not. He says that we, human beings, like the nature fall asleep in order to rest and regain strength before a difficult time.

As long as I can remember any type of poems, sonnets and other forms of English literature were, are and will be very hard to understand and interpret. Back in high school I realized that I am unable to read between the lines. I always interpreted literature in a wrong way. For instance, Whitman’s preface of “Leaves of Grass” talks about diversity of geography, culture, work, sexuality, and beliefs. Whitman mostly emphasizes American dreams of independence, freedom, and fulfillment, and transforms them for larger spiritual meaning. Overall, he values the importance of hard work within an individual performance and recognizes the necessity of being humble towards others.

My name is Agnieszka Rybak. I was born on one of that wintry and icy day of January in Poland.
When I was young I always have loved theater and because in Poland I was living in a small town I didn’t have so many opportunities to see plays or even take part in them. So in order to fill up this gap, we- my friends and I –pretended theater but this didn’t last so long because as we became older my friends lost the interest in it. However my interest in the theater didn’t disappear it even expended, today whenever I have time and money I go to theater instead of clubs or bars. As I went to high school I become member of Local Community Youth Center. Where I was a part of a dancing society, which learned to dance regional dances. Moreover in high school I took part in planning every years fashion show and celebration the first day of spring.

As I said at the beginning, I constantly wanted to be evolved with law and its mechanism, because I believe that through this filed I am able to in the minor change world which need some help to be fixed. Though I decided to do so after coming to the USA therefore, the justice system in here is opposite than this in Poland especially for domestic violence victims that in mostly cases are women and children.

On November 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th 2007, eight students of LaGuardia Community College were proud attendees of 62^nd Model UN Panel that took place in Washington D. C. The Untied Nations Conference was a very practical three day gathering of students not only form the United States but also from Canada and China.

During those three daysparticipants of Model UN Panel first presented the most intricate world’s problems for solution. After the process of selection through which the most urgent global issues had been decided to be solve on this conference, delegates of every participated nation in thispanel where looking for resolution through debates. At the end, every participant wasobligated to vote in order to choose the draft resolution that then will be become the
official resolution.
As I mentioned before eight students of LaGuardia Community College were taking part in 62^nd Model UN Panel and one of those eight honored students who had the opportunity to be there was me. My name is Agnieszka Rybak, I am Polish immigrant who came to the United States five years ago. At the time I arrived here, I never even dreamed that one day I will take part of something so gracious like this conference.

Overall through this forum I learned a lot about myself, I realized; who I am, what are my gaps and how to improve my person. Plus I am really glad that this type of chance met me right now because it gave the idea that there a lot to do for me on this world.

Is technology help increase the sell of books?

How many of you read first the book and then saw it on the big screen? I believe that there are many who did it and there is the same amount of people or more who just went in a straight line to watch it on the screen.

As we look at the literature world, we come to the very simples conclusion that today book’s authors are in the better situation than those who lived a hundreds years ago. They have advantage over them because of the technology which allows today make movie based on the story with celebrities and at the same time help become famous novelist and increase sell of his/her books. In another words, in the result of technology that we have now, many today’s book writers won’t die unknown like those who lived several decades ago.

I am assuming that many of you have seen the movie “Their Eyes Were Watching God” but how many of us knew this book and its author before it came on the screen- I suppose that not many of us.

As Susan Hodara wrote in her article “Twenty-Five Reasons to Turn Off the TV” the author of “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, Hurston was the black writer who “died …in 1960 [and] was buried in an unmarked grave” never never actually during her live time was properly recognized. Finally, few years after “in 1973, the writer Alice Walker resolved to locate Hurston’s grave” and later publish her biography written by Rober E. Hemenway. This gave her work short fame which she never got during the life. People started to recognized Hurston and her work “which includes four novels, and autobiography, short stories, plays, essays, articles and to collection of folklore.”

However, the greatest interest her person and work got in 2005, when Oprah Winfrey financed the production of “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and Halle Berry a famous actress took the first plan role. By this movie her person right now is well known and her book today is the part of college curriculum. And according to many “this is compelling book that will touch communities all over the county” – I read it and saw the movie; and need to agree that the story is amazing, touching and push us to think about our lives now.

Hurston history is a good example that technology helps book writers. Sometimes people need to first see the movie that is based on the book and if it looks interesting on the screen many will go and buy the book.

Are we mice or what?

Is exam that measures students’ critical ability an answer for today’s technologically advanced world? This is a question, which came up in my head after I read the article “Measuring Literacy in a World Gone Digital” written by Ton Zeller Jr. (The New York Times, January 17, 2005). Generally the whole article talks about the new exam that is created in order to measures students’ critical ability. The author of the text said “the Information and Communications Technology literacy assessment, which will be introduces at about dozen colleges and universities,…is intended to measure students’ ability to manage…,sort e-mail messages or manipulate tables and charts, and to assess how well they organize and intend information from many sources and in myriad forms. About 10,000 undergraduates at school from University of California, Los Angeles to Bronx Community College are expected to take the test [no later than] March 31.”

At the start I need to agree with Robert B. Reich (the secretary of labor department of the Clinton administration) who said “critical thinking is a central aspect of the new economy.” In today’s world where economy in fact is in great extent impacted by technology, people are required and forced to know how to work with computers and other available right now devices on the market. How much we make today also is impacted by technology, without it, now we can’t function properly, we can’t be even a valuable citizen of this world.

However, anyone please tell me how long more we will be perceived as those libratory mice that are used there for experiments. In some way I believe that this will continue forever, therefore, since computers came on the first place and world goes through so called “information literacy movement”, we –people made of bones and blood- don’t have any other option but only follow current trend.

Furthermore, the author of an article gives us a visual description how will the exam look like. He wrote that students in the first part of the test “would be asked to consider the various sources and suggestion, and to rank them by relevance to the original request.” On contrast the “other parts of the test ask students to do everything … [such as] sorting e-mail messages into appropriate folders…’reordering a table to maximize efficiency.” This whole idea, how is going to look the exam that calculates one’s critical ability it is completely outrageous. Please, explain to me, how we can estimate someone’s critical skills by sorting e-mails. To me this exam would measure person’s technological knowledge instead of critical awareness.

gaps II

How many of you was late with a project or didn’t meet dead lines. I am assuming that this have had happened at least ones in your life time. All this take place because nowadays everything goes so fast that people have difficulties to keep up with assignments, work etc. Many of us in most of the time scarify the private life, in order to have job done. However, how long we can run our life this way—surely not long. That’s why some sociologists, psychologists to help people deal with every day life, came out with the idea called “time management”. According to them, time management is the schedule of ours activities during a week, month or year that is made in order to become productive student, employee etc., and is easy to follow because we are the ones who write the plan. Yes, time management in some way might be very helpful for us, but is it easy to write and follow? Not exactly (here I am talking about myself). Every time when I sit down and try to write my schedule for oncoming week –I am getting crazy and upset. I realized that creating my graphic is not so easy for me because every time I got lost when it comes to decide about some spare time for myself. Moreover, afterwards I am all the time finding that didn’t work because there is always something that comes unforeseen during the week.

This semester I am reading...a lot or not?

And if I have some free time I am reading “The last juror” written by John Grisham.

When it comes to my feelings about reading I think that we should be grateful that we can read because today (in 2007 year) there are still people who don’t know how to read.

That’s why we should take the full advantage by going to schools and become educated person.

Hello Wrold

Hi everyone, my name is Agnes and I am a student of LaGuardia Community College. This semester I take Eng 101 course, where we were asked by a professor to keep a blog as another form of written journal or writer's notebook which is required in this class. Even if keeping blog is mandatory in this course, I think that this a very good idea because students will receive comments not only from a teacher but also from others and more or less improve literacy that is the main subject matter I this semester.

I assume that everyone had a moment where realized that knew something. My was in 2nd class of elementary school but to understand it I need to tell the story from the very beginning:
In 1^st class of elementary school a teacher claimed that I can’t read and since that day I was made by my mother to read laud to her everyday. Few weeks later she started to asked us (students) to read in class, when the time came for me to read she said that I can’t do it because I don’t know how and this was happening every time she assigned readings. The next year in 2^nd grade, we got a new teacher who on the first class asked every student to read. After we were done she asked some students to stay when class was over (she never called my name). Later on when I find out that called students where sent to after school class to improve their reading I was so happy she did call me because at that moment I realized I am capable to read pretty well. And at the same time show a teacher from previous class that she was wrong.
